Hearing Aid Repair Shop (HARS)
At the Hearing Aid Repair Shop (HARS) we pride ourselves on repairing any make and model of hearing aid.
We’re a joint venture company, which is owned by Mary Hare School for deaf children and a large multi-national hearing aid company. We started out in 2002 and we’ve been providing a fast and efficient repairs service to our customers ever since. 50% of our profits go to Mary Hare School, so by having your hearing aid repaired with us you’re actively supporting the education of deaf children and young people from across the UK.
“How do you do that?” “How do you write those words so fast?” “But there’s no letters on the keyboard AND you’re not even looking at it?”
With the advent of machine shorthand for verbatim reporting, these are just some of the questions our members have been asked. Back in 1853 when the Institute was established, querying minds would have been more likely to ask stenographers about the light and dark squiggles above, on or below the line, which was representative of Pitman shorthand, and other versions of its ilk.
BIVR exists to provide verbatim stenographers with ongoing training, guidance and continuing professional development, whilst at the same time promoting members’ services and protecting their interests. Known as shorthand writers, stenographers, palantypists (particularly in the STTR field), shorthand typists, court reporters, captioners, speech-to-text reporters, our members cover assignments in a wide range of forums, from producing a verbatim transcript in a legal proceeding to providing communication support for the D/deaf and Hard of Hearing community.
Our mission is to support schools and vocational training centres for disabled children and youth in sub-Saharan Africa.
At present, our particular interest is to support the education and vocational training facilities for deaf pupils in Eastern Rwanda, and also pre-school work in Kampala, Uganda. We are a small charity, and all of our Trustees are volunteers.
Mary Hare is a national school for the deaf in Newbury, Berkshire and is the largest school of its kind in the UK. The school moved to Newbury in 1949 and was officially opened by Princess Margaret in 1950.
Signature is the leading awarding body for deaf communication qualifications in the UK.
We’re dedicated to improving communication between deaf, deafblind and hearing people, and creating better communities in the process. Since we began our work to promote and teach British Sign Language in 1982, we’ve supported more than 400,000 people to learn British Sign Language (BSL).
Alongside our qualifications, we’re also helping employers and schoolchildren learn more about BSL and deaf awareness so that everyone has the opportunity to become a better communicator at every stage of life.
DeafUmbrella provide BSL Professionals & Communication services between Deaf & hearing people in London and Kent area.
Speech-to-Text Reporters (STTRs) provide professional communication support for deaf and hard of hearing people. AVSTTR, the Association of Speech-to-Text Reporters, was created to offer support and guidance to our professional members, to share learning through the exchange of ideas and experiences and to promote training. We aim to raise public awareness of our profession and to promote equal access to communication in English for deaf and hard of hearing people.
Terra Consultancy is a service provider for the Disabled community. Our work embraces the ethos of social enterprise and addresses all aspects of need for Disabled people from all backgrounds across the UK. We provide: specialist services for Disabled students, British Sign Language (BSL) interpretation, multicultural interpreting including International (ISL) and American Sign Languages (ASL), training, employment advice and advocacy as well as business consultancy. We also offer interpreting and translation services for many spoken languages. We promote awareness raising, access to information and inclusion through event management opportunities nationwide. Examples include Planet DeaFantastic EXPO and the Deaf Christmas Business Show.
Tuesday – Health
Hearing Advisory Service is an independent registered charity (RCN 1063430) offering over 30 years experience of providing practical help and advice to people affected by hearing loss. We work in partnership with NHS Audiology Departments and the Hearing Help charities in the Eastern Region, and offer ‘Hearing Aider’ training for front-line care home staff.
InterpreterNow’s Video Relay Service means deaf BSL users can contact NHS111 when they need health advice fast.
SignHealth is a charity dedicated to improving the health and wellbeing of Deaf people by making sure Deaf people get the same healthcare access and health information as hearing people. SignHealth campaigns to remove the barriers to health that Deaf people face as Deaf people in general have poorer health, simply because access to medical services and information is not routinely provided in sign language. SignHealth is committed to delivering a personalised service for each individual and provides services to Deaf people in three core areas:
SignHealth work is varied and aims to give Deaf people easier access to health, social care, and information as well as providing services which are not provided elsewhere. SignHealth supports Deaf people to live independently and to access information to make their own choices, but we know Deaf people still have poorer health than hearing people and we think it’s time for that to change.

UCL Deafness Cognition and Language (DCAL) Research Centre (www.dcal.ucl.ac.uk ) has developed a suite of online, short Deaf Awareness courses specially designed for Health Professionals (audiologists, doctors, nurses, professions associated with health and administrative staff). These courses will enable a better understanding of the communication needs of deaf and hard of hearing (HoH) patients and provide practical strategies to employ in your workplace to improve service provision. You will learn through watching videos of patients’ real life experiences and the perspectives of healthcare professionals.

UK Deaf Sport aims to enable Deaf people to reach their full potential in sport. We work to increase opportunities by working in partnerships with key organisations to create a sporting future that is DEAFinitely Inclusive from grassroots through to Elite level Sport.

At DSN, we’re proud of what we’ve achieved on behalf of our service users throughout Cheshire since we were formed in 1976. We’re proud of our team, our volunteers and other supporters, the local authorities we work with and the organisations we work alongside.
DSN is the service provider organisation for D/deaf* people in the county of Cheshire and the surrounding areas. These services are delivered under contract for Cheshire East, Cheshire West and Chester, Wrexham and Flintshire Councils.
The local societies (Deaf Clubs) located in the same premises in Chester, Warrington and Vale Royal are independent of DSN and are actively involved in shaping how we deliver services. Each society serves a distinct local community but is strengthened by its partnership with DSN, which is able to innovate and develop, whilst acting as a guide and support for the local organisations.
Services delivered include Social Care, Supported Living, Training, Day Services & BSL Communications, alongside a vast array of other projects delivered within the community.
Deaf Direct is a Deaf-led local charitable organisation that provide information and guidance. In addition to this communication services, outreach services, youth and family services. As well as YOUchoose partnership for deaf and hard of hearing people, family members, carers, professionals and other organisations in Herefordshire, Oxfordshire, Worcestershire and surrounding areas.
Saturday – Technology
SignVideo are a Video Relay Services and Video Remote Interpreting provider in the UK. We provide British Sign Language (BSL) video interpreting services to enable communication between the community of over 150,000 deaf BSL users in the UK and hearing people. Our relay service allows users to make and receive BSL interpreted video calls so that they can effectively and effortlessly communicate with each other. This happens through a professional video interpreter who relays the call between BSL and English. This service is available instantly on tablets, smartphones, computers and laptops via apps and software. We are also a Video Remote Interpreting provider, offering BSL video interpretation on site, when two people are co-located.
Our BSL video interpretation solution demolishes existing barriers facing service providers, businesses, work colleagues and family wanting to hold conversations with deaf BSL-using people. In addition, our service has reduced the previous waiting time of three to six weeks for a BSL interpreter to be available, down to an average of thirty seconds or less.
